Warm a mug by filling it with hot water, then empty it.

Heat cocoa powder, simple syrup, vanilla extract and milk gently in a small saucepan (or the microwave), stirring, until smooth and steaming, without letting it boil.

Why heat it gently? Milk, cream and chocolate scorch if they boil.
No simple syrup? Stir 1 tsp sugar into the warm drink until it dissolves.
