How to make a Gin Toddy
To make a Gin Toddy, stir with ice and strain into a rocks glass: 2 oz gin and ¼ oz simple syrup. Garnish with lemon peel.
You'll need
- Gin2 oz
- Simple syrupor ½ tsp sugar + a splash of water¼ oz
- Lemon peelgarnish
Pairs well with: Simple syrup · All syrups
Prefer it long and fizzy? Top it with soda water: that's the Gin Cooler.
Instructions
- 1
Pour gin and simple syrup into a mixing glass (any sturdy glass works).
- 2
Fill it with ice.
- 3
Stir for 20-30 seconds, until the outside is cold to the touch.
- 4
Strain into a rocks glass over one large ice cube.
- 5
Garnish with a lemon twist.
Why stir? Gin is clear, so a gentle stir over ice chills and dilutes it without clouding the drink.
No simple syrup? Muddle ½ tsp sugar with a splash of water in the mixing glass until it dissolves, then carry on.

About 28% ABV after mixing with ice, close to a neat spirit.
What's the difference between a Gin Toddy and a Gin Cooler?
Both use gin and simple syrup. The Gin Cooler uses carbonated water. The Gin Toddy is stirred and served in a rocks glass; the Gin Cooler is built in the glass and served in a highball glass. The Gin Toddy is the stronger of the two.
Should a Gin Toddy be shaken or stirred?
Stirred. Gin is clear, so stirring chills it while keeping it silky; shaking would cloud it with tiny bubbles.

A rocks glass.
