How to make a Bluebird

To make a Bluebird, stir with ice and strain into a cocktail glass: 1½ oz gin, ½ oz Triple sec, ½ oz Blue Curacao and 2 dashes Bitters. Garnish with maraschino cherry and lemon peel.

You'll need

1 drink

Instructions

  1. 1

Pour gin, triple sec, blue curacao and bitters into a mixing glass (any sturdy glass works).

  2. 2

    Fill it with ice.

  3. 3

Stir for 20-30 seconds, until the outside is cold to the touch.

  4. 4

Strain into a cocktail glass filled with fresh crushed ice.

  5. 5

Garnish with a maraschino cherry and a lemon twist.

Why stir? Gin, triple sec and blue curacao are clear, so a gentle stir over ice chills and dilutes them without clouding the drink.

Bluebird questions

What does a Bluebird taste like?

Mostly sweet and herbal, with a noticeable alcohol warmth. It's a very strong drink at about 29% ABV once mixed.

How strong is a Bluebird?

About 29% ABV after mixing with ice, close to a neat spirit.

What's the difference between a Bluebird and a Flying Dutchman?

Both use gin and Triple sec. The Bluebird adds Blue Curacao and Bitters. Both are stirred, but the Bluebird goes in a cocktail glass and the Flying Dutchman in a rocks glass.

Should a Bluebird be shaken or stirred?

Stirred. Gin, triple sec and blue curacao are clear, so stirring chills it while keeping it silky; shaking would cloud it with tiny bubbles.

What can I use instead of triple sec?

Cointreau or Grand Marnier will work.

What glass do you serve a Bluebird in?

A cocktail glass.
